What kind of food truck do you run?

the food truck was many years ago. it was called Medley and we made healthy food that was more fun. So think of things like Cauliflower Mac n' Cheese, Hearty Rice & Veggie Bowls, and Braised Local Meats. crazy to realize we started it almost a decade ago now

Beautiful writing Sam. Good to see you posting again up here.

I'm reminded of the book Shop Class as Soulcraft, by Matthew Crawford, who talks about how we've become so disconnected with the world around us because we barely understand how any of it works. This quote I think relates well to your piece:

"There seems to be an ideology of freedom at the heart of consumerist material culture; a promise to disburden us of mental and bodily involvement with our own stuff so we can pursue ends we have freely chosen. Yet this disburdening gives us fewer occasions for the experience of direct responsibility."

Thanks Rick! love your connection to Shop Class and that quote feels so aligned. i read that book before starting the food biz and it gave language to the deep desire i had at the time to work on something that felt more tangible and physical than the desk jobs Id had before.

one idea that has always stuck with me from that time is that "if you work with your mind, rest with your hands... and if you work with your hands, rest with your mind"

That's another good one.

Hmm... maybe even call that a "radical connection" to our environment??

ahh yes one might call it a radical connection.... and others an intuitive knowing :)

"Radical" connections to the environment come into play when you lead trail crews on 40-day hitches in the backcountry as well. Food and water. Food and water. Those are the only two things that keep anybody alive and working productively. The food and water should be of good quality, too. Skimp on either one too long and, eventually, you've got a riot on your hands. Also there is need to design a sanitary place for everybody to piss and take a dump. For without a well-placed pit toilet, even the most posh campsite turns funky pretty quick. How do you get your food? How do you get your water? How do stay clean? These are problems that every toilet-flushing, faucet turning, shower-taking, pool-swimming American should be required to face, surmount and ponder at least once in our lives. Men's group, women's group or whatever group. Should have to earn a Back to Basics cert before anybody nuts up to Ted Talk level.

hi Trail Rat, Lou's comment on "radical" is just a joke between friends. sounds like you've had some powerful experiences in the backcountry. i'd enjoy reading more about them if you've written and shared about it anywhere
