thanks! feels good to have it as a broad container that isn't just about me

it's really cool to see how much Kelly has struck a chord. and the whole way it went down was just epic. I hope Jonny captures some live reactions of her coming back from the silent retreat to discover how much momentum it has created

Yeah it's been so wild to witness... and yes I'm attempting to capture screenshot stories to share when she re-emerges (including this newsletter!)

Love this! It also reminds me of Internal Family Systems parts work. There’s resistance to sustaining something because there’s a part of you who is protecting you from something. Speaking to that part and letting them know you’re grateful but that they are working on an old script from the past. There’s not a real threat anymore. Acknowledging them and finding out what they think the threat is and working with them to update them with reality. Fascinating stuff!

the IFS connection is super interesting. hadn't thought of it like that but makes you wonder if different domains connect with or surface different constellations of parts. and maybe that's why our experience of (or success with) similar dynamics in different areas can diverge so much. fascinating indeed.

I'd love to find someone who has thought about how IFS in this context and around exercise more broadly. any ideas or recs?

Hey Sam & Meryl! I couldn't agree more and actually included IFS in the "Mental" creative regulation section...

"Parts Work (Internal Family Systems): Parts work is a ther- apeutic way of communicating with your various ‘inner parts,’ such as your inner saboteur, your protectors, and your inner child. Embracing that you have many parts, many of which are polarizing and at odds with each other, is essential for reclaiming a sense of wholeness inside of you. Look for therapists trained in IFS (Internal Family Systems), or get a book and explore journaling prompts independently. It’s quite easy to do your own parts work once you know how it looks and feels."

I've really seen how integrating my different parts has led to a more fluid and 'regulated' expression of creativity. And that my dysregulation was very often caused by inner protectors who were utilizing outdated techniques to "keep me safe."

From an exercise perspective, I can definitely see how different parts will feel differently about it. "One part of me loves exercise, and another part of me hates it" kind of thing...so communicating with each of the parts, letting them be heard, seen and validated...and then helping them join the same team with new roles. Or also stepping into the part that loves exercise consciously before engaging in it — like an exercise archetype that you can call forth (maybe it looks like Hercules or Rocky Balboa 💪)

I definitely want to expand on the IFS/Parts idea within creative dysregulation for the print version, so thanks for stoking that fire!

sweet, excited you're going to dig deeper into this.

i've joked with friends that we don't want to become David Goggins, we just want to have a small part of him within us we can tap into when the context calls for that level ferocious determination and insatiable energy.

This is how I feel about Jocko Willink and his perfected incarnation of discipline. There are some mornings when I hear his voice say "get out of bed, Kelly" and I listen. My day is usually better when I heed his advice. ha.

Specifically with exercise mmmm interesting. I don’t know anyone but would be a lucrative avenue for an IFS trained coach to go in! Any IFS coach or therapist would welcome working with that part of a client who is resisting (read protecting) maintaining regular exercise. Will share if I come across anyone with this speciality though.

Feeling really excited about this parallel you've drawn between creative dysregulation and exercise dysregulation, Sam! I sense the word 'dysregulation' is one that really serves a lot of experiences where we have inconsistency and inner turmoil. Even 'relationship dysregulation' or 'financial dysregulation.'

What I didn't share in V1 of the book but am going to for the print version is that I actually think creative dysregulation relates to attachment styles and strategies (e.g., secure, avoidant, disorganized, anxious). My creativity, for example, has been an expression of disorganized attachment and avoidant. I've absolutely experienced that with exercise as well — from being non-committal to a particular fitness path, starting/stopping, and avoiding it altogether (out of an aversion to the pain, shame and overwhelm that it brought up in me). But as I've healed my attachment wounds in other areas of life (namely partnership, relationships and creative work), I've been able to stabilize my fitness routines too and find greater joy in the process.

I'm curious if attachment styles/strategies and fitness lands for you at all?

Also, just feeling deeply grateful and in awe that you wrote this newsletter. Thank you for the glowing words and for sharing my book with your ecosystem of wonderful humans ❤️ Big hugs and love to you, Sam! And congratulations on the name change! It's super awesome and I love the font you chose 👏

really interesting connection! i haven't dug deep enough into attachment styles to have an informed POV, but this def makes me want to explore more.

one thing i'm fascinated by is how an unrelated activity or shift upstream can impact a ton of different areas. Like it sounds like healing your attachment wounds did for you. And what I think Jonny's NSM work has done for so many.

at the same time, i believe it can sometimes happen in the reverse direction. changing our relationship to exercise or creativity helps us understand and change the broader issue upstream. i'd love to better understand the circumstances or conditions when this seems to happen and when it doesn't generalize
